Resende Costa through the ages

Until it really became a county with this name, Resende Costa belonged to Tiradentes, which in that time was called São João del-Rei, which in turn belonged to the Comarca of Rio das Mortes, of which the seat was São João del-Rei. In 1840, the curacy (settlement that counts the presence of a vicar) was elevated to parish, or district (freguesia as it was called in that period), with the title Our Lady of Sorrows of France of the Arraial da Lage. In 1875 it was incorporated into the county called Brumado do Suaçui, now Entre Rios de Minas, from which it was separated at the end of the same year, and soon thereafter, was newly annexed to São João del-Rei County. In August of 1911, the county and the town, named the town of Resende Costa, were created, disengaging themselves from Tiradentes County.

In order to talk about the emergence of the Arraial, first we must speak of the General Fields Ranch, famous because it had belonged to the Inconfidente José de Resende Costa, the father. The ranch, which unfortunately no longer exists – a victim of the slump that many cities of Minas suffered during a good period in relation to the historic patrimony – was party to a period of intense political negotiations which tied the lage to the principal political and economic centers of Minas: São João del-Rei, São João del-Rei (Tiradentes), Vila Rica (Ouro Preto), Vila de Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Mariana), among others. [...] The ranch, which belonged to Resende Costa, is remembered as one of those places where important political discussions took place, considered subversive for the period, given that they contested the authority of the Portuguese monarchy, and consequently the mining authority which represented it, that is, the Viscount of Barbacena. In this way, the fact that the city was in this period just a district of Tiradentes does not indicate that here there was no political unrest.

On the 30th of August of 1911, the aforementioned county and the town were created, with the town being named Resende Costa. Because it is generally considered that the date of creation of a county is the date of its installation, the anniversary of Resende Costa is commemorated as dating from June, 1912, when the official installation actually occurred. In spite of that, it was only in 1923 that the name was changed to Resende Costa.
